From road-worn Americana to rogue puppets and Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Oklahoma City has a nicely weird little weekend lined up for you.
Here are a few happenings worth checking out…

Cinco de Mayo at Scissortail Park
Fri. May 1 | 4-10PM | Scissortail Park
Is it weird that Oklahomans celebrate Mexican food, music and booze for a day and tolerate anti-Mexican politics the rest of the year? Asking for a friend who boycotts anything with a whiff of May the Fifth.
Nevertheless, there’s an abundance of Mexican heritage and pride to celebrate, and you can find the first festival of the weekend happening downtown at Scissortail Park on Friday. There will be live music, dancing, traditional food, community activities and free, family-friendly festivities – and if you sneak out of work early, you might even find free parking!

James McMurtry with BettySoo
Sat. May 2 | 8PM | Beer City Music Hall
For anyone feeling rode-hard-and-put-up-wet, this show might be just your speed. Legendary singer-songwriter James McMurtry is bringing his sharp, story-driven Americana to Beer City Music Hall on Saturday, with special guest BettySoo opening the show. If you like your live music literate and gritty, give it a go – maybe he'll sing the one about Oklahoma’s meth industry just to be sweet!

Revenge of the Silly Goose Puppet Slam
Sat. May 2 | 7PM | Core4 Brewing
The “wonderfully weird” Silly Goose Puppet Slam returns to Core4 Brewing in West Village for a night of live puppet performances, strange stories, craft beer and whatever happens when fringe-theater weirdos are given the stage. Expect short, oddball acts that work for every attention span and level of intoxication.
-

OKC Cinco de Mayo Festival
Sun. May 3 | 2-11PM | Crossroads Renewal Project
Not all Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla celebrations are created equal, but this one is among the nation’s top festivals – worth a trip to the Southside on Sunday. Expect a free, family-friendly party drawing thousands for an entire day of international artist performances – live music and folklórico! – plus food, vendors and plenty of cerveza.
