After devoting so much grave attention to the country’s ailments this past week, I needed a break. I had a doctor’s appointment in Edmond and, afterward, craved something new—a spot that wasn’t just another fast-food chain.
I wanted something else, something different, something local.
Just down the road from the doctor’s office, I spotted a place called Eddies at 2828 E. 2nd St. I knew nothing about it, but I decided to roll the dice.
With my girlfriend in tow, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
The afternoon shift was quiet, with the lunch rush long gone. We took a seat near the bar, where our server—a friendly sort—quickly brought us waters and menus. The place felt like an indie version of Chili’s or Applebee’s, with a bit of TGI Friday’s vibe and Oklahoma City-centric decor on the walls.
As she brought my coffee, we placed our orders. A few TVs played what seemed to be live football games, though no one was really watching. The lunch-time drinkers were more focused on their beers and laughter. Good for them.
The first appetizer on our list was the amusingly named Okie Twinkies ($15.00). Fresh jalapeños stuffed with Eddie’s pulled pork and cream cheese, wrapped in blackened bacon, and served with BBQ sauce and house ranch—it sounded like the perfect start.
Looks can be deceiving—this appetizer packs a punch! Both temperature-hot and flavor-hot, the sizzling bacon was just a warm-up act. The burst of molten cream cheese and tender pulled pork hit me with a fiery intensity that singed my tongue. But no worries—the cool, creamy ranch was the unexpected relief I needed.
My girlfriend was feeling more daring. At our server’s suggestion, she opted for Eddie’s flaming specialty: the one-pound Chupacabra Wings ($16.00). Brined and smoked with their special Chupacabra seasoning, these wings came with a reputation—and an aroma—that promised a true adventure.
After a solid 15-minute wait, the wings flew out. They were everything I hoped for—tremendously spicy, with a bold, unapologetic chile-pepper rub and a beautifully charred finish. They hit just the right notes for both of us, making it an instant favorite.
But I was craving something more—something bigger, meatier, and even spicier for my main course.
Enter the eponymous Eddie’s Burger ($16.00). Topped with house wing sauce, pepper jack cheese, bleu cheese crumbles, crispy bacon, and a jalapeño smear, along with the usual lettuce, tomato, and onion, it promised to be the hottest burger on the menu. And let me tell you, boy howdy, it delivered!
Flames practically shot out of my nostrils as the burger took full effect on my senses. With each bite, the wing sauce, pepper jack cheese, and an epic jalapeño smear tore down my meat-based defenses. I was ready to dump a bucket of water over my head—now that’s a truly hot sandwich!
While it was hands-down the spiciest lunch I’ve ever tackled, it was also one of the most outstanding. By the time we got back to the car, our taste buds were definitely singed, but I couldn’t help thinking Eddie’s is a rare gem—a place I’m eager to revisit (with a cold water bottle in hand, of course).
Cómpralo ya!
