“Samantha Fulnecky Easy-A Act” Clears House Committee…

Today’s lazy college kids are getting all the breaks!

Yesterday afternoon, a House Education Committee passed, by a 6–2 margin, what we’re going to go ahead and call the "Samantha Fulnecky Easy-A Act" – a patriotic piece of legislation that will allow lazy, ill-prepared Oklahoma college students of all creeds, religions, and nationalities the chance to pass off their deeply held opinions and personal beliefs as educated knowledge, critical thinking, and actual understanding – and still walk away with an A.

News 9 had the basic details:

The Oklahoma Free Speech Committee met on Tuesday to review recommendations for the University of Oklahoma. This comes a few months after a student’s grade on an essay put a national spotlight on the university.

One of the recommendations made by the committee was for OU to explicitly state in its grading policy that students can share their opinions in assignments on controversial matters without impairment to their grade.

The bill would require state institutions to only grade a student based on their attendance and academic performance.

First of all, Oklahoma has a Free Speech Committee? Maybe I’ve read too many futuristic dystopian thrillers – or studied the Mao regime in China – but I’m pretty sure once free speech committees are created, the first thing to go is free speech itself.

Second, I think I’m going to re-enter college and get a degree in biology. Sure, science and math aren’t my best subjects, but now that I can answer every question with “Life is the way God made us. Please respect my opinion.” and still get an A, it’s too good an opportunity to turn down.

Here’s the full bill summary:

Seriously, where was this law when I was in college getting my English degree? Instead of agonizing over footnotes and citations for a paper on the Enlightenment, I could have just made up some BS and written, “Faith-based sources available upon request.” Womp womp.

Anyway, now that the bill has passed a House committee, I guess it heads to the Senate, where they’ll probably add to the bill by mandating that all blue books come with a built-in prayer section.

Because, you know, free speech and everything.
