Shane Jett Files New Bill Explaining, Once Again, Why Nobody Likes Him…

Here's a new one — you know the loud, annoying guy who says all the stupid, drunk-sounding things at the state Capitol? Well, now he's accusing other lawmakers of drinking on the job.

Earlier this week, TLO Super Fan Barb Hoberock filed a report about a new bill introduced by vaudevillian-faced State Senator Shane Jett — a man who somehow always looks like he just burst onto the scene yelling, "AND ANOTHER THING!"

Dubbed the "This Is Why You Don't Have Any Friends, Shane" Act, the proposal would punish Oklahoma lawmakers for participating in the age-old legislative tradition of drinking heavily at work by forcing them to take a breathalyzer test whenever someone suspects they're drunk.

Check this out:

A Republican senator has filed legislation to bar lawmakers from drinking alcohol on the job after he accused some of them of being drunk while taking critical votes.

Senate rules prohibit senators from being drunk or drinking while on the Senate floor, Jett said.

Jett's bill would require any lawmaker suspected of being intoxicated to take a breathalyzer test administered by a member of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, according to the measure.

Out of all the disliked people who work at the Oklahoma Capitol, you're not going to find a more consistently unlikable guy than Shane Jett — and if this bill doesn't perfectly explain why, nothing ever will.

"Teacher! Teacher! They're smoking in the bathroom! Teacher! They're breaking the rules!"

Seriously, nobody likes a tattle snitch – especially when it interferes with your attempt to pull a Don Draper and drink on the job. I bet he was jealous he wasn't invited into the cool kids' chambers to partake, so this is his petty way of flipping the table on the way out.

All that being said…

Lawmakers are drinking on the job at the Capitol?! That sounds kind of juicy! Please spill more Twisted Tea!

Sen. Shane Jett, R-Shawnee, said he filed Senate Bill 1640, which prohibits legislators from consuming and possessing alcohol while on duty, after noticing some were intoxicated on the Senate floor during the last day of the 2025 session when they were discussing a bill to fire Allie Friesen, the state's former mental health commissioner.

While Jett did not specifically name any senator, he said that during debate about the bill that ultimately removed Friesen, "you can see that there were members who used some very aggressive language and in their speech pattern and their appearance indicated inebriation." He said that he got "harangued" in speeches "that we know were fueled by Tito's and vodka."

Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, said Wednesday that Jett's accusations were "baseless and lack credibility."

Listen, if someone accused me of drinking Tito's and vodka, I'd also say the claims were baseless and lacked credibility. Tito's is vodka. I'd then immediately correct the record that I'm strictly a Jack and whiskey man.

Instead, Paxton gave Jett the full Nathan Dahm treatment and essentially stripped him of all power in the Senate. He also issued an angry rebuke that I'm pretty sure is shared by all 47 of Jett's remaining colleagues:

"I have made repeated efforts to work with Senator Jett and to provide him opportunities to serve as a constructive and professional member of the Senate. Instead, he has consistently chosen to attack colleagues, criticize a fellow member's spouse, use childish rhetoric and now is making serious accusations without evidence," Paxton said.

Wait a second. Acting childishly? Attacking colleagues? Criticizing spouses. Making claims without evidence? Is he talking about Shane Jett or Donald Trump?

For what it's worth, it's not just the mainstream drunks at the Capitol who don't like Jett. He's also catching heat from his own Freedom Caucus zealots.

Sen. Michael Bergstrom (R-Adair), also a member of the Freedom Caucus, said Sen. Jett was trying to undermine the goals of the Senate Republican Caucus and was hindering productive governance.

"Senator Jett is choosing to work against the broader goals of the Senate caucus rather than working collaboratively to make a positive impact for our state," Senator Bergstrom said. "I joined the Freedom Caucus because I believe in its stated principles, which are sound conservative policies, fiscal responsibility and doing what is best for Oklahoma. I did not join to alienate colleagues or divide the caucus, which is exactly what Senator Jett is doing."

Actually, I'd argue the opposite. Shane Jett isn't dividing the caucus – he's uniting it through the rare power of universal annoyance!

Anyway, with the GOP being the party of projection – and Jett apparently landing himself on the GOP deep-state hit list – I guess we should probably expect an alcohol-related scandal involving Shane to pop up sooner rather than later.

When it does, we'll be here to make fun of it.
