Taqueria Feliz and the Glorious Return of the $1 Street Taco

The other day, I was driving down Classen Blvd. when, without warning, a big banner from a bright red taco truck grabbed my attention and held it uncomfortably tight – “TACO TUESDAY ALL DAY EVERY DAY FOR ONLY ¢99!”

I then did what any hungry human would do – slammed the brakes, did a squealing U-turn, and skidded into the parking lot of a weed shop at 3408 N. Classen.

As my nostrils filled with the smell of burnt rubber, fresh weed, and fried pork, the name of the truck came into focus – Taqueria Feliz.

I haven't seen $1 street tacos since early-to-mid 2000s. Figuring it was a glitch or I accidentally time traveled, I knew must act accordingly…

Though my legs felt like jelly—I hadn’t been so nervous since my first date thirty-something years ago—I walked up to the raised counter of the food truck and sheepishly asked, “Can I get two of your dollar tacos…the marinated chicken and the fried pork?”

Then the man said the one thing a person always wants to hear: “That will be two dollars!”

Adding a bottled-in-Mexico Coke—the only Coke in my book—my bill came out to around five dollars and some change.

As I sat down on the benches in front of the truck, I thought about the past couple of years writing up the Taco Truck Chronicles. The recent price hikes that many taco trucks have tried to deal with are ever-climbing, with the new, higher prices scrawled on the menus.

Typically, I noticed that most truck-tacos are around three to five bucks, and don’t get me wrong, that is a good price…but a taco for one dollar?

As someone who is always on the lookout for the best deals, we need more businesses to step up and patrons to step out, and Taqueria Feliz is doing God's work—doing their part to stop steep prices and, in my case, severe hunger.

Speaking of severe hunger, after a few minutes, my order was up.

Wrapped in foil on a paper plate, the scent made itself present, and it was immediately evident that this wasn't your typical Taco Bell swill!

As I originally said, there were two varieties of one-dollar tacos available: the marinated chicken and the fried pork. Situated on a five-inch tortilla—typical taqueria standard—the allotted meat was piled on, with a smattering of onions and cilantro on top.

With steady bites, the chicken was pretty good by my taco-based standards. That being said, the fried pork was immensely tasty and immediately filling, working all of my taste buds in a pork-filled bath of porcine stasis.

My recommendation: go get yourself two of the pork tacos for a hearty lunch and two of the chicken tacos for a healthy dinner. That’s a well-rounded couple of meals, I say!

As I blotted the corners of my mouth with a napkin, I chugged the last of my Coke, washing down my taco bliss. To me, a long-time lover of food criticism and all its trappings, Taqueria Feliz’s one-dollar tacos are a reason for living, especially in this tight world of closed wallets and empty pockets.

I was looking over the full menu before I went to my car. Apparently, the food truck is just a small piece of the OKC-area Taqueria Feliz empire, with the main brick and mortar restaurant located at 5920 NW 23rd. Though I haven’t been by there yet, you better believe that I will be reviewing them in the next couple of weeks!

But, until then, I got some spare change in the dashboard cubby…maybe one more taco for the road?
