In the last Taco Truck Chronicles, I hit five trucks along S.W. 59th, between South May and South Santa Fe, and every one of them delivered. I had no idea that stretch was ground zero for one of Oklahoma City’s biggest taco truck booms.
Well, when it rains, it must pour!
It was around noon on a recent Sunday — prime lunchtime, when church parishioners are getting out and are getting their grub on — and I had a new batch of S.W. 59th taco trucks to try.
I had everything from seafood-based walking tacos to the greatest Mexican burger... and I still have a lineup of even more S.W. 59th taco trucks to get to soon. Until then, here’s a new batch of trucks that are totally worth your time and your money to visit.

Taqueria la Flama (17 SW 59th St)
Set up in a rundown tire shop near Santa Fe Ave., Taqueria la Flama was absolutely jumping — easily the busiest truck I visited, with a pack of high schoolers in church clothes chowing down on flame-broiled food that seemed to be the big draw.

I had my sights set on their barbacoa burrito, but I wanted it drenched in wet. They delivered.
Aptly called the Wet Burrito ($10), this soggy behemoth weighed at least two pounds, and combined rich, meaty barbacoa with a modest amount of rice, all drenched in red sauce and sour cream. It was exceptional.

Tacos Y Mariscos Tarrayaz (Corner of S. Dewey and SW 59th)
Seafood feels like the final frontier in the taco truck world — and Tacos Y Mariscos Tarrayaz is jumping in with both sea legs. The menu is so mariscos-forward, I had to take some time to seriously consider what I was going to try.
Although I was initially tempted by the fish-based tostada, it was the Tosti-Ceviche ($12) that landed in my net.

Imagine a walking taco filled with shrimp and other coastal creepers, tossed with lime and served over Salsa Verde Tostitos in a bag. It was vibrant, briny, and had a flavorful kick that left me wide-eyed.

El Muchacho Alegre (Next to Sherri’s Diner, 704 SW 59th St)
Wanting a little sweet treat, I stopped El Muchacho Alegre, a snack-wagon overflowing with juices, smoothies, shakes, and shrimp-laden sips. The air was thick with Tajín.

But, in this fresh weather, I wanted something more chocolatey. For five bucks—less than a Starbucks drink, natch—I had the Choco Chocolate ($5.00), and it was way more than just chocolate. Rich, cold cream, dark chocolate drizzles, and a surprise layer of cinnamon at the bottom gave it a warm, spicy finish. A treat I didn’t know I needed.

El Gordo Burger (5421 S. May)
Now here’s something I didn’t expect from the Southside…El Gordo Burger and their waistline-growing, heart-clogging, breaking-bad burgers!
Just a few blocks west of S.W. 59th and May, El Gordo Burger lives up to its name, "fat burger." Their menu covers everything from pulled pork to orange chicken to a guac-heavy chef salad. But I had to try their namesake — the Gordo Burger ($11).

It was a true triumph! This fat burger is stacked with bacon, ham, avocado, onions, tomatoes, ketchup, and cheese, all piled onto a perfectly charred patty. Served with fries and a dippable chile Toreado, it was pure, greasy brilliance.

S.W. 59th is proving to be a full-blown district of taco truck greatness — with everything from mariscos innovations to Mexican burgers that rewrite the rules. And I’m not even done! Part Three of Taco Truck Chronicles: 59th St. will take us even deeper into this Southside street of rolling kitchens, where the next bite might just be the best one yet.
Cómpralo ya!
