In case you missed it, Oklahoma Senator James Lankford – the less insane of our two US Senators – was censured by the vagabond gang of religious deplorables who run the Oklahoma State GOP.
His crime?
Doing his job, and working with Democrats to craft bipartisan legislation for our country.
Yep, that’s right. Instead of challenging union bosses to fights during Senate hearings, he simply reached across the aisle to work with the other party to address our country’s challenges.
What an awful guy, huh?
The resolution was shared publicly on Xitter by Dusty Deevers – the freshly elected State Senator who wants to ban no-fault divorce, pornography, and all other things sexless couples usually take advantage of:
News of the censure isn’t surprising.
In recent years, the State GOP has been commandeered by dahmass Nathan Dahm and other right-wing Christian nationalists who backed religious zealot Jackson Lahmeyer for Senate and think anyone who doesn’t get on their knees to suck the imaginary Donald Trump D before bedtime is an anti-American communist.
Basically, they’re uncompromisingly uncompromisable idiots who want to sabotage government and make it as ineffective as possible... and are shocked and outraged that a guy like Lankford who, mind you, shares about 90% of their views, would dare try to fulfill his elected role as a US Senator.
I guess Lankford is aware of the bad optics of both being censured by his party and working with Democrats, so he’s gone on a media tour to try to explain the situation to outraged Derplahomans. Earlier today, he appeared on both Channel 9 and Channel 5 and tried to explain what he is doing.
For example:
Lankford joined News 9 live in the studio to talk about border security and said everyone should be concerned about problems at the border, no matter what party you come from
"If I could put it in context, in the last five weeks, we've had more people illegally cross than during the Obama administration we had in one year," Lankford said.
Lankford said that for the last four months, he has been negotiating with Democrats in the Senate and the White House to pass a bill to help keep law enforcement in control of the border.
"We're now at the very edge of that bill being released. Hopefully, this week, that bill will come out and actually do all of those things," Lankford said. "It actually takes our border from the chaos that it is now to a secure border, and it radically transforms how we actually handle the process."
So far, Lankford has received pushback from Republican leaders such as Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump, the Speaker of the House, and Oklahoma Republicans. He said many people have asked for a bill like this in the last three years, but now that he is about to pass it, they are backing out.
"To be very clear, I'm being accused of promoting amnesty and everything else. There's no amnesty in this bill at all," Lankford said. "The focus is, we have a responsibility constitutionally to be able to protect our nation, we have a responsibility to be able to protect our families."
As a registered independent, I appreciate James Lankford reaching across the aisle and working with the other party.
I also think it’s nice of him to get out and about, go on a local press tour, and try to logically and rationally explain to Oklahoma conservative voters what he is doing and why.
Sure, that won’t matter because most conservative Oklahoma voters are illogical and irrational, and will likely follow the State GOP's lead beat and assume he’s evil for working with (gasp!) Democrats, but at least he tried.
Anyway, there’s a part of me that wants to feel sorry for Lankford and how he’s routinely having to outrun and outlive the conservative monster he helped create, but that would kind of be like feeling sorry for Dr. Frankenstein. If anything, Lankford is getting exactly what he deserves.
