We blew our chance to break the John Sullivan “Gun to the Head” story…

8:30 AM EST on February 27, 2012

Last Thursday, we received the following email from a Mole named "Anonymous Tipster." Here's what he/she wrote:

I have audio of Rep. John Sullivan using violent rhetoric at a town hall event in Bixby Wednesday.

When asked about the federal budget/debt Sullivan responded with:

“I supported it, the Paul Ryan budget, sent it over to the senate. Now, I live with some senators, I yell at them all the time, I grabbed one the other day and shook them, I’d love to get them to vote for it. I’d love that. But, other than me going over there with a gun, and holding it to their head, and maybe a killing a couple of them, I don’t think they’re going to listen unless they get beat.”

And no, Sullivan didn't say "I was just joking, or hahaha." No, none of that.

This might make a good Lost Ogle slideshow like the one you did for the OETA hearing. :-)

Yeah, it might have made a good Lost Ogle slide show...if the Mole didn't send the same damn email to the national SEO-optimized, post-churning leftwing political website TalkingPointsMemo.com! Thanks for that. We thought we had a fun little scoop story. Now we have nothing and are still obscure.

Oh well, at least the Mole also sent us this fun little "exclusive" photograph from the town hall:

Yeah...that's pretty lame. It's the same image we used at the top of the post, only we added a cheesy Photoshop effect. Sorry for misleading you. I mean it is from the town hall and everything, but, eh, screw it. I guess I'm just slightly bitter that we didn't get to break the story, which is kind of odd when you consider that it's not really story.

You see, who cares about what John Sullivan says? All he did was use an extreme figurative example to get across a simple point to his nutty base of right-wing constituents and supporters. Was it the best thing in the world to say? Probably not. Was it inappropriate? Probably so. Do I care? Not at all.

Political correctness blows like a bunch of gay sailors and adulterous soccer moms. Kudos to John Sullivan for speaking his mind and for at least saying something honest and interesting, no matter how stupid or bad or distasteful it may be. And the next time someone sends us any exclusive crap on a Thursday afternoon, I'll put a gun to my head and go write about it as soon as I'm done playing Temple Run.
