Stephanie Bice votes against bill that protects her own interracial marriage…

10:51 AM EST on December 9, 2022

As you may have seen, the House of Representatives recently passed a semi-bipartisan bill that “enshrines marriage equality in federal law, granting protections to same-sex and interracial couples.” It now heads to President Biden’s desk for signature.

As the daughter of an Iranian immigrant, and wife of a white dude named Geoffrey who spends his mornings spreading cream cheese on bagels, you’d think Congresswoman Stephanie Bice – the cool and relatable craft beer-drinking “moderate” Republican from Oklahoma City who represents Oklahoma’s once-competitive 5th Congressional District – would have been one of the 36 Republicans to vote for the bill that grants protections to interracial couples.

Well, that’s what you’d get for thinking.

Bice actually voted against the bill that guarantees her marriage will remain valid and legal in all states, including backward places like Oklahoma. I assume she voted this way because she either…

A) Hates being married

B) Enjoys being a US Congresswoman from Oklahoma, and therefore has to placate elderly right-wing voters who participate in primary elections by voting against any piece of Democratic legislation, including ones that would benefit her personally, or risk being primaried by a more right-wing candidate.

Naturally, Bice can’t admit to either of those options, so she went with some B.S. religious freedom excuse.

Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Oklahoma City, said, “I have tremendous respect for individuals and the decisions they make in their personal relationships.

“Without the adoption of additional amendments in the House or Senate, this legislation withholds key protections for religious communities, charities, and individuals. Had this legislation contained comprehensive protections for all Americans with deeply held religious beliefs, I would have supported it.

“It is paramount that every individual is shown respect and compassion while also being given equal protection under the law.”

There’s a part of me that kind of feels sorry for people like Stephanie Bice and Tom Cole and other moderate'ish Republicans out there who have to suck it up, play the role of obstructionist, and dream up ridiculous excuses for why they vote “No” on everything, but then I remember they’re spineless lemmings and puppets who crave nothing more than money and power, and will say and do anything and everything to stay in control, including voting against their own marriage, so fuck them, right?
