Weekend Radar: What to Do in OKC This Memorial Day Weekend

So much for your grand plan to monkey around on Monkey Island!

If you’re not sure what to do with yourself on this rainy Memorial Day weekend – sorry, Paseo Arts Festival – we have a few ideas.

Assuming you can peel yourself from the sanctuary of a dry home, here are some things worth checking out over this gloomtastic Oklahoma City weekend.

Eddie Griffin
Fri., May 22 - Sat., May 23 | Bricktown Comedy Club

Fresh off his ongoing live residency in Vegas, you can catch Eddie Griffin right here in OKC with a weekend of standup shows at Bricktown Comedy Club. The Saturday night shows are already sold out, but as of publication, you can still get tickets to tonight's shows at 7:00 and 9:45. Premium seating is available in the first row if you are a glutton for punishment.

49th Annual Paseo Arts Festival
Sat., May 23 - Mon., May 25 | Paseo Arts District

With any luck, the sun will shine long enough at some point to head down to the Paseo and enjoy all the art and life you'll find at the annual festival. Expect over 80 juried artists from across the U.S. working in a variety of mediums, plus live music, beer, food vendors and fun activities for the little people.

At last year’s festival, one of my friends was so intoxicated by an interesting jewelry vendor that he bought welded-on silver bracelets for the whole group – permanently binding everyone together like a tiny cult.

GalaxyCon Oklahoma City
Fri., May 22 - Sun., May 24 | Oklahoma City Convention Center

From what I gather, GalaxyCon is basically ComicCon with a broader umbrella of nerddom: sci-fi, fantasy, anime, gaming and cosplay. Expect a three-day “festival of fandom” with celebrities, artists, writers, voice actors, cosplayers, entertainers, creators, wrestlers, fan groups, panelists, etc.

Seeing my favorite voice actor goofing out his lines in real life would ruin it for me, but if there are Muppets involved, I could be persuaded.

Astral Plane Drifter Screening + Q&A with Mike Caravella
Sat., May 23 | 9:30PM | Rodeo Cinema Stockyards

This film screening at Rodeo Cinema Stockyards is an excellent back-pocket, no-plan plan. Astral Plane Drifter (2024) follows a grief-stricken outlaw through a psychedelic sci-fi western nightmare in search of meaning, revenge and drugs. There’s a Q&A after, presuming you want to keep being awake after the 9:30 showing.
