Weekend Radar: What to Do in OKC This Weekend

It’s Mother’s Day weekend, and if you don’t already have Sunday brunch reservations, you’re screwed. Even Jeff’s County Café will turn you away!

While we may not be able to save you from a lack of matriarchal preparedness, we do have plenty of bright and buzzy things to do in Oklahoma City this weekend. Here are a few to consider…

Thunder Playoffs Watch Party | Game 3 vs. Lakers
Sat. May 9 | Doors 6:30PM | Game 7:30PM | The Criterion

The Thunder are on the road for Western Conference Semifinals Game 3 on Saturday (or at least that’s what Patrick told me). If you won’t be in LA, think the couch is too lame a watch party venue, and don’t mind crowds, consider Thundering up at Criterion’s Game 3 watch party. It’s free, but space is limited, and you must RSVP.

OKC Zoo Sip & Stroll
Fri. May 8 | 6-10PM | OKC Zoo

Give Oklahomans unfettered nighttime Zoo access and encouragement to imbibe, and all bets are off! This 21+ fundraiser lets you wander the Zoo after dark – without little ones underfoot – while sipping drinks, enjoying tasty bites and discovering wildlife. Thanks to the live entertainment and free-flowing booze, the animals will enjoy a rare treat, as well: watching middle-aged humans become the spectacle.

-

Flower & Garden Festival
Sat. May 9 | 9AM-4PM | Myriad Botanical Gardens

Plant lovers and garden enthusiasts alike will be converging on Myriad Gardens Saturday to spend their children's inheritance. Expect 70+ merchants showcasing flowers, herbs, vegetables, native plants, succulents, ornamental grasses and other springtime financial traps for biophiles.

Beyond the blooms, there will be garden art, handmade jewelry, soaps, and other artisan goods to peruse – as well as the usual food and drinks – from local vendors.

OKC Ballet’s Shorts: A Night of Premieres
All weekend | Showtimes vary | Civic Center Music Hall

Calling all attention-span-challenged lovers of performance art! OKC Ballet presents three shorter works in one show, including a contemporary ballet set to Radiohead’s music. The program also includes two other premiere pieces, but honestly, with the bar set at Radiohead, who gives a shit? Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30PM and Sunday at 2PM.

Factory Obscura: Uncovered – Cartoon Theme Songs
Sat. May 9 | 8:30PM | Factory Obscura Mix-Tape

Local bands reimagining cartoon theme songs feels like the exact kind of weird but potentially excellent thing Factory Obscura exists to host. Each band/musician will reimagine a cartoon theme song in their own signature style, blending familiar melodies with their unique sounds.

Expect a theme song lineup that includes Powerpuff Girls, Steven Universe, Pink Panther, The Proud Family, Kim Possible and more.
