Deadbeat Dunk: Desmond Mason Jailed for Failing to Pay Child Support

Mommas, don’t let your babies grow up to be deadbeat cowboys!

Thanks to a tip via the Ogle Mole Network, we’ve learned that Desmond Mason—a former OSU great, NBA slam dunk champ, and self-described “ARTrepreneur”—was booked today in the Oklahoma County Jail on contempt of court charges related to unpaid child support.

His bond was set at $50,000, and as of publication time, he is in the process of being released.

Here’s his mugshot:

After some quick internet research and asking around, it turns out the penalty for not paying child support can include up to 180 days in jail, payment of attorney fees, and fines. It all kind of depends on how much is owed and how long the payments were overdue.

I guess that means that Dez—a guy who started 104 consecutive games for OSU during the Eddie Sutton glory days—could soon find himself in another bright orange uniform, one with far fewer perks than the ones he wore in Stillwater.

Speaking of perks, now seems like a good time to mention that Desmond earned $37-million in salary over his luxurious NBA career:

While we’ve all heard tales of athletes blowing their fortunes, Dez transitioned post-NBA into a posh, over-priced “celebrity artist” for Oklahoma City’s ruling class, filling the town with imitation Basquiats and fancy murals for southside mansion bowling alleys...

It looks like child support isn’t the only thing Desmond has difficulty paying.

A quick scroll through OSCN shows Desmond as a defendant in various lawsuits and civil judgments.

For example, in 2016, American Express was allowed to collect $91,000 in unpaid debts through garnishment.

Just a month ago, he and his new wife—who I hope never has to collect child support from him someday—were sued for $9,100 in unpaid dues to Rose Creek Country Club in Northwest Oklahoma City.

Anyway, we’ll continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
