Maybe it’s because I’m A) under the age of 75, B) Find cults of personality weird and creepy, and C) not a washed-up college football coach who brought shame and disgrace to the program I led—yet is still revered by the university and local media—I haven’t watched or replayed more than 60 seconds of any Donald Trump (or Kamala Harris) speech during this presidential cycle.
Well, outside of the one where Trump was nearly assassinated. I did watch some replays of that one.
Barry Switzer, meanwhile, seems to binge Trump speeches like they’re old Nebraska Cornhuskers game tape.
In fact, he recently declared the speech Trump gave at his rally in New York—the one panned for its overt xenophobia and racism—as possibly the best one yet.
Check this out:
I haven’t watched a second of Trump’s MSG speech, so I can’t confirm whether Switzer’s observation is accurate. But I seriously doubt Trump topped this one from a couple of weeks ago:
Not surprisingly, Switzer’s tweet spread across the hellscape formerly known as Twitter like a brick of cocaine in an OU locker room circa 1987.
It got plenty of cheers and likes from the Sooner-born, Sooner-bred crowd, but it also triggered a wave of outrage from people who were shocked—shocked, I tell you—to learn that Barry, an 87-year-old fossil raised in the Jim Crow South who routinely inserts himself into Oklahoma politics, worships a shade of orange that’s even uglier than the one worn by Texas.
Here are some examples:
If only these folks had subscribed to The Lost Ogle back in 2016, they might have seen this coming…
Yep, in case you forgot, Switzer has always been a Trump fan. His nepo-son-in-law, Hunter Miller—one of the business geniuses who allegedly duped Barry Tramel into signing a $1.5-million line of credit—hosted a lavish fundraiser for Trump before the 2016 OU-Ohio State game, drawing out all members of the local ruling class and aristocracy.
And that wasn’t Switzer’s only dalliance with Trumpism. He attended a South Dakota Trump rally organized by oil tycoon Harold Hamm and even claimed to have met with the president-elect at Trump Tower after the 2016 election, though it turned out to be a joke / lie.
I guess the public shaming and backlash from some Sooner faithful didn’t sit well with the Bootlegger's Boy, so he doubled down by tweeting that he’s been a registered Democrat since way back when Democrats were the racist political party.
Big deal. As today's tariff-supporting, Russia-enabling, Democracy-destroying Republicans show, political parties are just like college football offenses and always in a state of flux. It’s not the party that counts, but who you support and vote for. And Barry Switzer supports a demented con-man who—like many of Switzer’s former players from the 1980s—is a convicted felon.
Anyway, I guess this is a friendly reminder for all aging Southern Democrats who are still stuck in the past, support Donald Trump, and are watching their party leave them in dust like Billy Sims racing down the sidelines, to update your voter registration before the next election.
Stay with The Lost Ogle. We’ll keep you advised.
