5 Cold and Flu Survival Tips for a State Raised on Gravy and Prayer

8:51 AM EDT on October 29, 2026

Temperatures are beginning to drop, and that means cold and flu season is approaching. We here at TLO take cold and flu very seriously, because like so many pros in the gig economy, if we get sick... well. There's no one paying us to lie around the house on leave.

You may be wondering why I’m writing about cold and flu when I’m not a medical professional. Rest assured I have a pathogen resume that makes me uniquely suited for this.

My qualifications:

  • I have an almost 2-year-old, and that kid can find a germ in an autoclave. I am ready to fight sicknesses at a moment’s notice.
  • I taught for 5 years and never got sick, even though I had about 300 students a year.
  • Call it anti-social behavior, but your girl has never had Covid. I do still dutifully get my yearly booster, though.
  • I think I’m immune to norovirus. It ripped through my house and my kid puked in my hair like 4 times, and I was fine. My husband, however, was sick as a dog.

It’s with this in mind that I share the tips and tricks you need to stay healthy this cold and flu season. Let’s get into it!
