TLO Restaurant Review: 48 Spices

One of the many reasons I truly love taquerias is that, for the most part, they offer “no frills” dining, where usually the money that might otherwise be spent on outlandish decor and signage goes where it should – the food. I think we can agree that better ingredients and better quality make for a better restaurant.

That brings me to African restaurant 48 Spices at 4331 NW 50th St.

Although you won’t find a taco on the menu, they take that same no-frills approach to dining, serving excellent food and letting it do the talking.

Sure, the dining room is as barebones as it gets, with plain tables and lamps with a French futball game playing on the TV. But overlooking that, it’s their well-worn grill cranking out their charred specialties and endless pots of stews that really warm the heart—and give 48 Spices its reputation.

Featuring dishes primarily from the countries of Cameroon and Nigeria, as I looked over the menu, I noticed that each unique item is resplendent with audacious flavor that I desperately wanted to try but, sadly, never had the means... I guess that means OKC is a big town, right?
