Edmond Mysteriously Benches Its City Attorney…

11:29 AM EDT on September 30, 2026

In case you missed it, the Edmond City Council held a special meeting this week to place City Attorney Madeline Sawyer on paid administrative leave, pending a mysterious “further review” that nobody involved seems particularly interested in explaining.

Here are basic details via The Oklahoman:

The [Edmond] City Council has placed its top attorney on leave in a move made without public explanation.

Councilors met for about 45 minutes in a closed-door executive session on Monday, Sept. 28, then voted 4-1 to put City Attorney Madeline Sawyer on paid administrative leave…

City officials did not say why they placed Sawyer on leave, adding that they could not because it is a personnel matter. Sawyer declined to comment on the city council’s actions.

The decision to place Sawyer on leave came nearly two weeks after she moved to dismiss Secretary of State Ben Lepak's public intoxication charge in Edmond Municipal Court.
