I think about ethnic identity more than ever, since I have a kid now. How do I teach my kid what it means to be Iranian, when the West interfered in Iran long before I was born, allowing the ayatollah to take over and fundamentally destroy the Iran my dad grew up in? How do I teach my kid what it means to be Mexican and how my grandpa was part of the El Charrito restaurant chain that later became El Chico in a state where ICE pulls over brown folks at random? How do I teach my kid about our Tribe in a state where the governor is openly hostile to Tribal sovereignty?
And how do I teach my kid what Indigenous people look like when old white dudes are hell-bent on being absolute dicks?
